Build a template mxAURA can fill

A template is a HubSpot marketing email with placeholders where the words change. The placeholders are called tokens. You design the email once. mxAURA fills the tokens for each contact right before HubSpot sends, so one template can carry a whole sequence of messages.

The four fixed tokens

HubSpot has four places it controls itself: From name, From address, Subject line and Preview text. Each gets its own token. In the editor, look for the purple mxAURA link next to each of those fields and click it. The token goes in for you.

The sender tokens are filled from the default sender in mxAURA, so an agency template works in every client's portal without changes. Subject and preview are filled per message.

Everything else is a numbered field

Body content uses Field 1, Field 2, up to Field 30. There is no "headline" token or "CTA" token. You decide what each numbered field means for this template, and you give it a name in mxAURA after you import.

To insert one:

  1. Click inside a text module. The module toolbar gains an mxAURA button.
  2. Pick a Field. Use Field 1 for the first thing that changes, Field 2 for the next, and keep going in reading order.
  3. For an image, paste the field token into the image module's URL box. For a button or link, paste it into the Link box.

Where you put a field tells mxAURA what kind of content it holds. See Which token goes where.

Tracking

Insert Tracking (pixel + ID) once, into a Rich Text or HTML module near the bottom. It is one block that carries two hidden tokens. Without it, opens never register and every report shows zero.

Import

Open the mxAURA panel (the envelope button at the bottom right) and press Import. mxAURA saves the template, lists its fields with the type it worked out for each, and shows any it could not work out as Type unknown.

You can save with unknown types. You cannot use the template in a message until every type is set. That rule exists so a URL never lands in a text box and a paragraph never lands in an image.

Reusing a template

Change the email in HubSpot any time. Press Re-import in the panel. Names and types you set by hand stay. Fields that moved get re-checked. Fields you removed are flagged, not deleted, so messages that used them still open.
